How To Play Mau Mau

  1. Shuffle the deck of cards and deal each player 5 cards.
  2. Place the remaining cards in a draw pile in the center of the table.
  3. Flip over the top card of the draw pile and place it face up next to the draw pile. This card will be the first card in the central pile.
  4. Starting with the player to the left of the dealer, each player takes turns playing a card from their hand to the central pile. The card played must match either the suit or the rank of the card on top of the central pile.
  5. If a player cannot play a card, they must draw a card from the draw pile. If they are able to play the drawn card, they may do so. Otherwise, their turn ends.
  6. If a player plays an 8, they get to choose the suit for the next player to match. The next player must play a card of the chosen suit, or another 8 to choose a new suit.
  7. If a player plays a jack, the next player must draw 5 cards from the draw pile and skip their turn.
  8. If a player plays a queen, the next player must draw 2 cards from the draw pile and skip their turn.
  9. If a player plays an ace, they can change the direction of play. For example, if play was going clockwise, it would now go counterclockwise.
  10. The first player to get rid of all of their cards wins!

Keeping Score
